ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) — Several apartments in the Bonnie Doone apartment complex in Athens are dealing with no air conditioning during the searing heatwave.
In addition to that, the entire complex is in disrepair.
Joy Jones says that the air conditioner in her apartment has not worked for quite a while, and it has been unbearable for her and her two small children.
“It’s been a whole year later, and we still don’t have air conditioning in our house, and they gave me a window unit, and the window unit didn’t work,” said Jones.
Dozens of residents say it has been unbearable, and that the owner and his management team have ignored their plea for help.
“Even when the owner came out, I’ve seen him look at air conditioning units and say, ‘Oh, this needs to be replaced,’ but never, ever has anyone come out and did anything,” one tenant said.
The lack of cool air is only part of the problem for renters at Bonnie Doone Apartments.
There are abandoned buildings, trash and grass that is so high that the playground is unusable. One renter said that he brought in his cousin to cut the lawn.
“If you look at the very front of the building and see that grass at the edge of the road, that’s how long it’s been growing,” said Jones.
According to the sign on the management office building, the last known owner of the complex is listed as Millennia Housing Management with an address in Cleveland, Ohio.
Neighbors say that there hasn’t been a manager on duty to spur the repairs, and their last hope was to reach out to the Limestone County NAACP, which says that the treatment that they have received has been inhumane.
“It’s very sad, and the things that they have been wanting to get help with getting addressed, they haven’t been addressed at all,” said Wilbert Woodruff, NAACP President.
Jones and the other tenants say that they want some relief from the heat and to get some repairs for their small children, but they have no idea of how long it will take for that to happen.
Efforts to reach ownership were not successful.
