A Ventura County man was sentenced to prison for a DUI crash that injured two police officers.

Luis Fernando Piceno, 28, of Moorpark, was sentenced to five years and four months in prison for crashing into two Simi Valley officers in their patrol vehicles.

On Oct. 24, 2024, Piceno was speeding on Tapo Canyon Road in Simi Valley when he collided with the marked patrol cars.

Piceno admitted to driving 80 to 90 miles per hour at the time. Both officers were transported to the hospital for treatment.

An alcohol screening revealed Piceno had a blood alcohol level of 0.13%, which was over the legal limit.

On June 16, 2025, he pleaded guilty to a DUI causing injury. He also admitted to special allegations including causing great bodily injury in commission of a felony, causing injury to more than one victim, and a drunk driving prior.

The incident marked Piceno’s second DUI conviction. On July 24, he was sentenced to five years and four months in prison.

Piceno’s driving privilege was revoked for three years and he was ordered to pay nearly $41,000 in restitution to the Simi Valley Police Department for damage to the patrol vehicles.

“This case shows the devastating and lasting consequences of impaired driving,” said Jillian Ewan, a Ventura County District Attorney who prosecuted the case. “We are thankful the officers are alive today. The District Attorney’s Office is committed to holding impaired drivers accountable and keeping Ventura County safe.”
