The Eugenio Suárez trade sweepstakes is seemingly the top story at the trade deadline this year. The Arizona Diamondbacks are expected to trade their expiring third baseman, and there are bound to be a lot of teams with interest in Suárez.
The Cincinnati Reds have reportedly shown interest in Suárez, though it’s viewed as a long shot. The New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners could be two of the more aggressive suitors in the market. The Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs also make sense as potential fits in the coming days.
MLB’s Mark Feinsand recently revealed there were a few developments in the Suárez sweepstakes, including one that might see him remain in Arizona through the trade deadline.
“Eugenio Suárez is the crown jewel of this trade market, but sources say Arizona — which is in sell mode — is asking for ‘a ton’ for the slugger, and if that price isn’t met, the Diamondbacks might hold him and try to re-sign him in the offseason,” Feinsand wrote in a post to Twitter/X on Thursday.
While everybody seems to assume the Diamondbacks will trade Suárez because of his expiring contract, Arizona hasn’t been shy to spend money. The front office could hold onto the star third baseman and attempt to sign him to a new deal in free agency if they believe they can pull it off.
But at the end of the day, trading him now makes the most sense. There’s likely going to be quite an exciting bidding war in the coming days that’ll result in Suárez being traded for a haul of prospects.
Even then, the Diamondbacks would have the same opportunity to re-sign him in free agency at the end of the year, just the same way the Tigers traded Jack Flaherty at the deadline last season and re-signed him in the offseason.
