Our Flag Means Death creator David Jenkins has been tapped to write the pilot for HBO Max’s upcoming Booster Gold TV series as part of James Gunn’s new DCU. If the pilot proves successful, Jenkins is set to serve as the showrunner of the superhero series, Deadline reported Wednesday.

Jenkins issued a public statement about the new gig on his Instagram on Wednesday, saying, “It’s true y’all! I’m writing a pilot about this lovable goofball for @hbomax. Honored to work for James Gunn and very happy to inherit this project from Danny McBride, two of my creative heroes…Superman’s kind again and fun and he has a doggie! Let’s gooooooooo!”

Jenkins previously worked with HBO Max on his pirate-inspired romantic comedy Our Flag Means Death — a show that was cancelled in 2024 after two seasons. David referred to the cancellation as a “premature end” but maintained that the “fine people at Max” showed him and his show nothing but love.

As for Booster Gold, the hero, also known as Michael Jon Carter, debuted in 1986’s Booster Gold #1. Carter, a football star from the 25th century born in Gotham City, gets suspended from school for gambling. He then manages to travel back in time to the present-day DC Universe, along with his robot companion, Skeets.

Using his knowledge of historical events and futuristic technology, the man takes advantage of his situation to become rich and famous, becoming a superhero named Booster Gold — a nickname given to him by former President Ronald Reagan after he saved his life.

Not much information has been given on how Booster Gold will look or play out in the DCU, but fans of the goofball can now sleep easier: Your boy is one step closer to making his debut.
