Funcom’s Dune: Awakening is a complex, beautiful, and sometimes brutal game where players struggle to survive on the desert planet of Arrakis by gathering resources, crafting equipment, and undergoing trials. Exploring the planet inspired by Denis Villeneuve’s film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic science fiction novel is rewarding, but often involves dying of dehydration, being devoured by a sandworm, or getting killed by another player character.

The Art and Making of Dune: Awakening offers a more chill way to take in the sights while also learning how the game was made. Releasing on Oct. 21, the coffee table book features interviews with the development team on how they created in-game locations like the Hagga Rift and the Hand of Khidr, and their spins on the setting’s iconic characters. The book is written by Andrew Farago, author of A Minecraft Movie: From Block to Big Screen and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Ultimate Visual History, with a foreword by Dune: Awakening creative director Joel Bylos.

The art includes illustrations, concept sketches, and digital renders showcasing the gameplay mechanics. Publisher Insight Editions gave Polygon an exclusive preview of four of the two-page spreads, ranging from a look at character creation to a lunging sandworm.

The Art and Making of Dune: Awakening arrives on Oct. 21 with a retail price of $50. You can pre-order it from your local bookstore or online.
