The St. Louis Cardinals have a lot of big decisions to make ahead of the trade deadline. They’re on the fence of contending or falling out of the postseason race as they sit 2 1/2 games out of the third wild card spot in the National League on Sunday.

If the Cardinals were to sell, they could look to trade pitchers Erick Fedde, Miles Mikolas, and Sonny Gray, among others. Starting pitchers tend to land massive returns on the trade market during this time of year.

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale recently reported that Gray and Mikolas would exercise their no-trade clauses if the Cardinals attempted to ship them away in any sort of trade deadline deal.

“Cardinals starters Sonny Gray and Miles Mikolas still say they have no interest in leaving St. Louis, and would exercise their no-trade clauses to veto any potential deals,” Nightengale wrote.

It’s long been expected that Gray would ax any trade to send him out of St. Louis. He has multiple years of team control left on his deal and has seemingly fallen in love with St. Louis and this ball club. Gray takes responsibility for mentoring younger pitchers in the organization and has been excellent this year.

Mikolas has struggled, so it’s hard to imagine any contending team in baseball wanting to acquire his services either way. If the Cardinals make a real postseason push, there’s a chance they’ll look to cut Mikolas rather than trade him.
