Sunderland earned promotion last season, finishing fourth in the Championship and going on to win the promotion playoff with a 2-1 win over Sheffield United. Trailing for much of the game, Eliezer Mayenda tied it up in the 76th minute before a stoppage-time goal from Tom Watson sent Sunderland through to the Premier League.
With the promotion, Sunderland will head to the top flight for the first time since the 2016-17 campaign, when the team finished last in the EPL and then followed that up with relegation out of the Championship the next year. The team has done a good job reversing this downward spiral.
Sevilla is coming off a disappointing La Liga season, finishing just 17th in the table last season. The last three seasons have been rough for Sevilla, with the side finishing outside of the top 10 in all three campaigns. That’s a far cry from the preceding decades – before the 2022-23 campaign, the last time Sevilla fell outside the La Liga top 10 was back in 2000.
