The Boston Red Sox have been through quite the roller-coaster ride of a season so far. They’ve had low moments, including the drama that surrounded Rafael Devers and led to his eventual trade. But they’ve also had high moments, including the recent winning streak that’s placed them back in the postseason race.

With Boston winning so much, it’s hard to imagine it doing anything but buying at the trade deadline. There are a few holes on the roster, including on the pitching staff and at first base, that the Red Sox could look to upgrade.

FanSided’s MLB insider, Robert Murray, recently suggested the Red Sox could land a “rare” intra-division trade with the Baltimore Orioles to acquire slugger Ryan O’Hearn this month. O’Hearn plays some outfield, but he would likely be used solely as a first baseman in Boston.

“The Orioles have already made one intra-division trade. Why not another? The Red Sox are in position to buy at the deadline and with the right series of moves, could be a World Series contender even after trading Rafael Devers,” Murray wrote. “O’Hearn would give them certainty throughout the season at first base and bolster the lineup. It’s a move that makes plenty of sense, with Josh Naylor of the Arizona Diamondbacks looming as another potential fit.”

If the Red Sox can make an intra-division trade work without overpaying, O’Hearn would be a solid fit at first base.

Boston could slot him in the lineup as a temporary solution to its issue at the position. When Triston Casas returns next year, the Red Sox could move on from O’Hearn.

But for now, adding a player like the Orioles’ slugger would be a massive improvement in the lineup. It’s the kind of move that would help take the Red Sox from a potential contender to a legit contender.
