She’s Supergirl, and she’s here to save the world—the question is, when?

Dedicated DC Universe fans are likely already aware, but a Supergirl solo film starring Milly Alcock is in the works as a follow-up to James Gunn’s 2025 Superman. Fans got a taste of the forthcoming film with a surprise cameo from Supergirl herself at the end of Superman.

Gunn’s latest, starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel alongside costars Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, has received rave reviews from fans and critics alike. Naturally, the question on everyone’s mind is, when is Supergirl coming out?

Here’s everything we know about the hotly anticipated superhero film, including when it will hit theaters.

When does Supergirl come out?

First things first: the release date! As of publishing, the film is set to be released on June 26, 2026. The palindromic release date (6/26/26!) was first announced back in March 2024.

Gunn revealed in May that the film had wrapped—well over a year before its release—and is now in post-production. There are no guarantees, but it seems like everything is on schedule.

Who’s in the Supergirl cast?

As we mentioned, MillyAlcock will star as Supergirl, a.k.a. Kara Zor-El, a.k.a. Kara Danvers. If the Australian actor looks familiar, that might be because she recently starred as Simone Dewitt in Sirens. The 25-year-old also appeared in the first season of HBO’s House of the Dragon as the young Rhaenyra Targaryen.

Jason Momoa will cameo as bounty hunter Lobo, while David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham will play Supergirl’s parents, The Hollywood Reporter reports. Eve Ridley will play the young alien girl Ruthye, while Matthias Schoenaerts will play the villain, Krem.

Though this is pure speculation, we wouldn’t be surprised if David Corenswet also makes a cameo as Superman. (Did you know that Superman and Supergirl are cousins? I didn’t!) Because what’s a superhero universe movie without some cross-film synergy?

What’s the plot of the Supergirl movie?

The film was adapted from Tom King’s 2022 comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, according to Deadline, by writer Ana Nogueira. It will be the second movie under the new DC Studios spearheaded by Gunn and Peter Safran and is directed by Craig Gillespie.

Gunn told reporters that Supergirl’s adventures on Earth will look a lot different than Superman’s. “We see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl,” said Gunn. “She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

Haven’t we seen this before?

Per Deadline, the last Supergirl film released in the United States came out in 1984, with Helen Slater in the title role. Melissa Benoist starred in the CW’s TV adaptation of Supergirl for six seasons, from 2015 to 2021.
