Nearly five years since Netflix entered into a content agreement with Ubisoft, the streamer has ordered an Assassin’s Creed live-action series, based on the best-selling video game franchise.

The project will be created, showrun, and executive produced by Roberto Patino (DMZ, Westworld) and David Wiener (Halo, Homecoming). Executive producers also include Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, Austin Dill for Ubisoft Film & Television, and Matt O’Toole.

Assassin’s Creed, the series, is a high-octane thriller centered on the secret war between two shadowy factions — one set on determining mankind’s future through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will. The series follows its characters across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity’s destiny.

“We’ve been fans of Assassin’s Creed since its release in 2007. Every day we work on this show, we come away excited and humbled by the possibilities that Assassin’s Creed opens to us,” Wiener and Patino shared in a joint statement. “Beneath the scope, the spectacle, the parkour and the thrills is a baseline for the most essential kind of human story — about people searching for purpose, struggling with questions of identity and destiny and faith. It is about power and violence and sex and greed and vengeance.”

They added, “But more than anything, this is a show about the value of human connection, across cultures, across time. And it’s about what we stand to lose as a species when those connections break. We’ve got an amazing team behind us with the folks at Ubisoft and our champions at Netflix, and we’re committed to creating something undeniable for fans all over the planet.”

As part of Netflix and Ubisoft’s deal, plans were in place to create an Assassin’s Creed universe, including live-action, animated, and anime TV projects. A live-action series was always set as the streamer’s first project, with Die Hard scribe Jeb Stuart originally attached to write in 2021.

Since the Assassin’s Creed franchise launched in 2007, Ubisoft has sold over 230 million games worldwide, becoming one of the best-selling series in video game history. It was adapted as a feature in the 2016 Assassin’s Creed, directed by Justin Kurzel and starring Michael Fassbender. In 2017, Ubisoft originally signaled its plans for an Assassin’s Creed TV series.

The new series joins Netflix’s other video game adaptations, including Castlevania, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and the upcoming Splinter Cell: Deathwatch. Arcane, based on Riot Games’ League of Legends gaming franchise, became an Annie- and Emmy Award–winning animated series.
