A mom has delighted the internet after capturing the beginning of an adorable friendship between her baby and dachshund.
Cheyenne Graham welcomed her son Louis in 2024, and since then, she’s been amazed by how patient her dachshund Cooper has remained. For many months, Cooper was patient and loyal but didn’t necessarily show that much interest in his baby brother—especially because he didn’t do a whole lot.
That changed when Louis was around a year old and he finally learned how to throw Cooper’s ball. As soon as she saw her son (attempt to) launch the ball, Graham, 31, told Newsweek that she felt “really excited” because it meant the duo could finally start interacting and playing.
“When Louis was born, we exposed them to each other a lot,” Graham, of Melbourne, Australia said. “It’s taken a while for Cooper to show an interest in Louis, and now that he’s no longer just a little potato, and can throw a ball for him, they’re best buds.
“They played like that, at the time, for maybe 10 minutes. These days it’s a lot longer, and they play throughout the day together.”
Graham captured the adorable moment when Louis threw the ball for Cooper and initiated a game of fetch. She shared the clip on Instagram (@life_with_chey) and it went viral with over 767,000 views and more than 48,800 likes at the time of writing.
Internet users can’t get enough of the blossoming friendship, but for Graham, there’s another reason for her to be so ecstatic. She joked that now she can see “an end in sight” for having to throw Cooper’s ball all the time because now there’s an extra set of hands to do it.
“Louis is getting better at throwing, so the ball doesn’t just drop to his feet. But Cooper still prefers that one of the grown ups throw it so he can actually run after it,” Graham said.
She continued: “Honestly, they’re like brothers. Louis is the little brother that’s always invading Cooper’s space, and Cooper is the bigger brother that pretends he’s not interested in what Louis is doing but is like his shadow. He’s also quite protective of Lou, he doesn’t like when strangers come up to him unannounced. “
After sharing the video that marked “the beginning of a lifelong friendship,” Graham has been amazed by the overwhelmingly positive response. She has connected with countless people who praised the bond between her dog and son, and others who shared their excitement to have this one day in the future.
Graham is certainly witnessing a “beautiful relationship” between them, and she can’t wait to see them get even closer as Louis grows up.
The viral Instagram video has generated over 190 comments so far, as one user wrote: “A core memory just formed for the both of them.”
