Adelita Grijalva wins Democratic primary election for Raúl Grijalva’s seat in Arizona’s CD7

PHOENIX — Arizona voters headed to the polls to choose their Democratic and Republican candidates for the late U.S. Rep. Raúl Grijalva’s seat on Tuesday.

Adelita Grijalva emerged as the winner of the throng of Democratic primary candidates, while Daniel Butierez defeated the slimmer crowd of Republican candidates.

What’s notable about Arizona CD7 special primary election?

The late Grijalva served southern Arizona in Congress for over 20 years until he died in March at age 77 from complications with his cancer treatment.

Arizona’s Congressional District 7 spans much of the state’s border with Mexico and includes parts of six counties: Cochise, Maricopa, Pima, Pinal, Santa Cruz and Yuma — as well as cities like Tucson, Yuma, Avondale, Goodyear, and Tolleson.

This seat is one of three key vacancies in Democratic districts that could shift the balance of power in the House this fall.

Since CD7 is a Democratic stronghold, Grijalva’s victory in the party’s primary election makes her the heavy favorite to triumph in the Sept. 23 general election.

Who did the winners of the Arizona CD7 special primary election beat?

Tuesday night’s victors had stiff competition in the Arizona CD7 special primary election, especially among the Democrats:

  • Daniel Hernandez: A former state lawmaker who helped save former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords’ life after she was seriously wounded in a mass shooting in 2011.
  • Deja Foxx: A reproductive rights advocate and influencer who spoke during the Democratic National Convention last year.
  • Jose Malvido Jr.: An Indigenous activist and scholar.
  • Patrick Harris Sr.: A retired health care executive.

Libertarian Andy Fernandez Jr. and No Labels hopeful Richard Grayson were write-in candidates for their respective parties’ primaries.
