DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — With temperatures reaching up into the 90s, people are looking for ways to cool off, and for many, that means buying a sweet treat.
“Not a lot of people want ice cream when it’s very cold, so we definitely get our rush through the summers,” Kaleidoscoops owner Jessica Fernandez said.
Jessica and her husband, Erik Fernandez, reopened Kaleidoscoops in June 2024. Based on their two summers open, Jessica said the heat drives sales, and the shop’s busiest months are June, July and August.
“We got something to refresh before we go out to play,” said a Kaleidoscoops customer.
The ice cream industry has an $11.6 billion impact on the U.S economy, according to the International Dairy Food Association. Your local ice cream shop likely sees dozens of customers contributing to that number every day.
“We get grandparents with their grandkids during the day,” Jessica Fernandez said. “Teenagers typically come late afternoon. The variety of people, it’s just everybody.”
She said cookies and cream, butter pecan, and pralines and cream are popular flavors at Kaleidoscoops.
The International Dairy Foods Association says vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and butter pecan are Americans’ favorite flavors.
