The Boston Red Sox are in the midst of an impressive win streak and can hope for more when they return from the All-Star break.

Shortly after trading away franchise slugger Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants, the Red Sox have gone on a 10-game tear and have good reason to believe that star third baseman Alex Bregman can put his injury problems behind him with some extra rest.

“His plan is to return to Boston on Tuesday and report to Fenway Park to get more work done on his strained right quad,” according to Peter Abraham and Alex Speier of The Boston Globe. “Bregman, 31, has hit .298 with a .927 OPS and 35 RBIs in 53 games for the Sox since agreeing to a three-year, $120 million contract that includes opt-outs after this season and next.”

Since going down with his quad injury, news has surfaced that Bregman would consider signing an extension or a new contract with the Red Sox before the end of the season. The New York Post’s Jon Heyman reported that “both sides wouldn’t mind getting something done,” though discussions haven’t yet been held.

If a new deal can’t be reached, Bregman is almost certain to opt out of his current contract and seek something more lucrative instead. And, speaking to Abraham and Speier, the third baseman spoke out for the first time since that news broke with one word about the chances of a new agreement being reached: “Maybe,” he said.

“I think for me, I’m focused on playing good baseball and trying to help this team win games,” Bregman added, per Abraham and Speier. “We’re obviously open to hearing whatever the Red Sox have to say.”

As the Red Sox look to continue their win streak and Bregman focuses on returning at full strength, it seems increasingly likely that the two sides will find a way to stay together beyond this season. In any case, it seems like Bregman is willing to skip free agency if his current team makes the right offer.
