According to J.K. Rowling herself, the first two scripts for HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series are “so, so good.” The project, which will arrive in 2027 on HBO, has just begun filming. To celebrate the event, the network has released the first image of little Dominic McLaughlin in his Gryffindor uniform as Harry himself. He’s not Daniel Radcliffe, wearing round glasses and touching the thunderbolt on his forehead with his fingers—but still, the photo makes quite an impression.

McLaughlin bested 30,000 children for a chance to become the Boy Who Lived, along with his new costars: Arabella Stanton, who plays Hermione Granger (taking over from Emma Watson), and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley (picking up from Rupert Grint). The first image of the new Harry in costume has an air of shy tenderness; perhaps he doesn’t quite believe that he’s Harry Potter either, even though he is holding tightly to the clapperboard from the show’s first episode.

And how could he know what’s in store? A magical inheritance awaits McLaughlin, as well as a lot of pressure and expectation.

Other cast members have also been announced as the series begins production: Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, a fellow Gryffindor; Amos Kitson as his cousin, rotten Dudley Dursley; Louise Brealey as Madam Hooch, the broom flying instructor; and Anton Lesser as Garrick Olivander, the man in Diagon Alley who not only sells wands, but also associates wizards and witches with their future.

They join other actors already announced: John Lithgow as Headmaster Albus Dumbledore; Janet McTeer as Professor Minerva McGonagitt; Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape; and Nick Frost, recently seen in the live version of How to Train Your Dragon, as semi-giant Rubeus Hagrid. The show’s first season will also feature Luke Thallon as Professor Quirinius Quirrell (the secret villain of the story), while Paul Whitehouse will have a longer tenure as Hogwarts caretaker Argus Filch.

Original story in VF Italy.
