Two Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) deputies face federal charges for using their positions as law enforcement officers to intimidate and harass private citizens while moonlighting as security personnel for wealthy clients, including a now-jailed cryptocurrency entrepreneur, federal prosecutors said Monday.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California, 43-year-old David Anthony Rodriguez of La Verne pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy against rights. A second deputy, 33-year-old Christopher Michael Cadman of Fullerton, has agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy against rights and filing a false tax return. Cadman is expected to appear in federal court in the coming days and faces up to 13 years in prison.

Both deputies previously worked for Adam Iza, a 24-year-old cryptocurrency businessman who referred to himself as “The Godfather.” Iza has been in federal custody since September 2024 and pleaded guilty in January to conspiracy against rights, wire fraud, and tax evasion. His sentencing is scheduled for December 15.

According to court documents, Cadman and another LASD deputy threatened a man identified as one of Iza’s adversaries during a meeting in Iza’s Bel Air mansion in August 2021. “Deputy 6” allegedly held the victim at gunpoint, after which the victim transferred $25,000 to Iza’s bank account. The following month, Cadman helped organize a traffic stop in Paramount that led to the same victim’s arrest. Prosecutors said Cadman received cash payments from Iza for these actions.

In addition to the civil rights violations, Cadman failed to report at least $40,500 in income on his 2021 federal tax return, according to the plea agreement. He admitted to owing roughly $11,000 in unpaid taxes.

In a separate incident, Rodriguez admitted to abusing his law enforcement authority in July 2022 by obtaining a court-authorized search warrant under false pretenses. Prosecutors said he falsely claimed the warrant was part of a robbery investigation in order to secure GPS data from a victim’s cell phone on behalf of a private client not connected to Iza. Rodriguez then shared the data with co-conspirators, including LASD Deputy Eric Chase Saavedra.

Saavedra, 42, of Chino, pleaded guilty in February to similar charges. He operated a private security firm and is accused of using the illegally obtained phone data to help deputies and others harass and intimidate the victim. He is free on a $50,000 bond and awaits sentencing.

Rodriguez is scheduled to be sentenced on November 10 by U.S. District Judge Percy Anderson and faces up to 10 years in federal prison.

The case is being investigated by the FBI and IRS Criminal Investigation, with assistance from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Maxwell K. Coll of the Cyber and Intellectual Property Crimes Section.
