Bachelor in Paradise: Do Jess and Spencer Get Engaged at the End?

If any couple has what it takes to go the distance on Bachelor in Paradise, it’s Jess and Spencer. Of course, it’s only been two episodes (of which there are at least about eight more to go), but so far, Jessica Edwards and Spencer Conley have proven they’re there for the right reasons, are emotionally mature, and have the kind of chemistry that reality show producers only dream about.

But this is Bachelor in Paradise after all. New contestants—and distractions—arrive weekly. Other than Sam in week one, Jess and Spencer have yet to be tested and seem as solid as a couple could possibly be. (Although, as I said last week, if these two don’t make it, I want ABC to highly consider Spencer as the Bachelor and Jess as the Bachelorette.)

Another sign these two have what it takes to go the distance? They were barely in tonight’s latest episode. Aside from some cute moments in the kissing booth (where Spencer made us love him even more by saying he loves a rom-com), and Spencer telling Jess that she is “the reason that Paradise has exceeded my expectations” at the rose ceremony, we barely got more than five minutes with the lovebirds. Yes, drama guarantees TV time, but come on: We want to see love, too.

At least Jess isn’t bothered by it. She tells Glamour she’s actually okay with being in the background. “Better everyone else than us, as far as the drama is concerned,” she says.

Of course, the question on everyone’s mind (or maybe just mine) is whether Jess and Spencer get engaged at the end. And would she even want to in this accelerated environment?

While she’s keeping her cards close to her chest, she does drop a few insightful hints about whether she might get engaged. She also teases who to look out for when the Goldens finally arrive. “In the next episode, everyone will be very, very shocked,” she says from her family’s beach condo in San Diego. “You never know what could happen.”

So what’s the deal? Read on for more.

Glamour: As somebody who loves love, I was very disappointed we got so little of you and Spencer in tonight’s episode. What gives?

Jess Edwards: That is so sweet. I think we just weren’t giving the drama. We’re just in the background, doing so well. There’s a couple clips where you can see us just hanging out in the pool and hanging out at breakfast, and during the cocktail party we’re sitting in the corner eating dinner together. It’s just so funny. I’m like, yeah, that’s fine. Honestly, I’m glad that we’re in the background because better everyone else than us, as far as the drama is concerned.

Was there anything we didn’t see in the episode between you two that we would have found interesting?

We just deep dove into our family dynamics, just really getting to know one another on a deeper level. Obviously, you saw on night one we did that already. We did a little trauma dump right off the bat, which is hilarious. But yeah, just getting to dive deeper and learn more about each other’s upbringing and that sort of thing. So, while everyone else is mad about people going on dates, we’re like, Oh, finally we can just spend time together.

Is Spencer exactly how we think he is based on what we’ve seen so far?

One hundred percent. It’s so funny too, because I think also it’s online, where people are like, Whoa, where did this personality come from? I don’t think we saw much of this on Jenn’s season. Going into it, he was on my radar because I thought he was super cute and seemed like such a great guy, but I really wanted to see if our personalities meshed. And it was instant. He is so bubbly and funny, although sometimes his jokes go right over my head, and I’m like, “Wait, what?” [Laughs]

Do you think that you guys have what it takes to go the distance?

At that point in time? I’m putting myself back in my shoes at that moment. One hundred percent.

When you were going into Paradise, are you the type who could see yourself getting engaged at the end?

I went into Paradise completely open. I was like, you know what? If I feel that it’s right in the moment, then sure. But if I don’t, I’m not going to pressure something just because I’m on a show. If I leave with a successful relationship, that’s just as good to me.

At the end of Monday’s episode, what was your mindset in terms of where this could go? Could you see yourself getting to that point with him?

Yeah, I think that our instant chemistry, our instant connection…I had never felt that before. And I think that it really just put into perspective, like, Wow, this is just the beginning.

So no choppy waters ahead? Or might there be?

I am going to just let you watch. It’s Paradise, so you never know what could happen. There’s already been teasers of things that happen later on. So are we still there? Are we gone? You’ll just have to wait and see.

You know how people say, If those two can’t make it, there’s no hope for the rest of us? That’s what you guys are right now. You’re couple goals. For those of us trudging through the dating pool and not having much luck, what hope can you give based on your experience and time with Spencer so far?

I love that question, because I have been in that position where I’m like, Are there any good guys out there? Spencer showed me that so early on, and everyone can see it as well. So just wait, because there are good guys out there and maybe you’re just not looking in the right places.

I’ve got to go to Paradise. That’s what you’re saying?

You got to go on a reality TV show is what I’m saying.

Meanwhile, we did get the drama at the end of tonight’s episode when Susie declined Justin’s rose. Your reaction was hilarious.

Oh my God. As you can see at the end of the episode, we’re all just like, What is going on? For me personally, I’m crushed because I’m like, wait, this means that my best friend, Lexi, is going home, and I don’t want that to happen. So everyone was like, What does this mean? What’s going on? I can’t speak for Susie, but I think it’s written on her face. She’s in shock. Everyone’s in shock. You never know what could happen in Paradise. And on Tuesday’s episode, everyone will be very, very shocked.

Tuesday is also when the Goldens come on the show. Who is the Golden contestant we’re all going to be talking about? Who shined a little bit more bright, if you can say that?

I love all of them, but if I had to pick, oh…this is the hardest question you’ve given me. Honestly, I’m really excited for Leslie and Kathy.

Anything else that you can preview as we head into the next batch of episodes?

Some shocking things will happen. You’ve got some excitement, and you’ve got some surprises.

Well, as long as we get more of you and Spencer. Tonight was a good episode, but I wanted to see more of you guys.

[Laughs] Like, where are they? That’s so funny. That makes me smile.

Programming note: A new episode of Bachelor in Paradise airs tomorrow, Tuesday, July 15, on ABC, and streams the next day on Hulu.
