Toronto has meaningful second half baseball in store this season.
The Blue Jays are the hottest team in baseball at the moment and have catapulted ahead of the New York Yankees for first place in the American League East.
Because of the recent success, Toronto is focusing on acquiring starting pitching prior to the trade deadline and one of its main priorities is a former Cy Young Award finalist.
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported that Toronto is interested in Arizona Diamondbacks starter Zac Gallen.
Gallen is in the final year of his contract with Arizona, making him a prime rental for a playoff caliber team that is looking to add a proven pitcher to its rotation.
He has struggled a bit this season with a 7-10 record and a 5.40 ERA across 20 starts and 115 innings pitched.
The struggles were a bit out of nowhere, as Gallen has finished top five in Cy Young Award voting two of the last three seasons and his highest season ERA in that stretch was 3.65 last season.
Gallen has allowed four-plus earned runs in five of his last seven starts, making that a major reason of concern for teams that are wanting to acquire him from Arizona.

Due to the expiring contract and down season, it is likely that Toronto, or any other team for that matter will not have to give up too much of its minor league talent to acquire Gallen for the remainder of the season.
If he gets moved, regains his confidence and turns into the Gallen of old, he could very well be the most impactful acquisition of the entire trade deadline.
