Struggling Orioles Make Important, Aggressive Trade Deadline Decision

The Baltimore Orioles came into the season with high expectations, but they’ve failed to live up to them.

As of now, the Orioles are seemingly out of the postseason race. If they can manage to run off a 10- or 12-game win streak in the next three weeks, things could change, but the Orioles don’t look like a contending team this year.

Because of that, they’re expected to hit the trade market as sellers. Baltimore has a few position players it’s expected to use on the trade block, but its pitching staff is more of a question mark.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today recently reported the Orioles are expected to use Zach Eflin, Tomoyuki Sugano, and Charlie Morton as trade bait ahead of the upcoming trade deadline. It’s unclear how much attention this trio of starters will get on the market.

“Baltimore Orioles starter Zach Eflin, who has been out with back discomfort since late June, is expected to return to the Orioles rotation after the All-Star break, and will become immediate trade bait,” Nightengale wrote. “The Orioles also are expected to trade Charlie Morton and Tomoyuki Sugano, barring a dramatic winning streak after the break.”

None of these pitchers would net the Orioles a king’s ransom on the trade market, but the return would help the team moving forward.

With Baltimore falling off a cliff, largely due to its pitching staff, it’s not surprising the front office is looking to overhaul the unit.

The Orioles need to bring in a few new faces to the pitching staff. There’s a chance Baltimore trades this trio of pitchers and looks to acquire one or two controllable arms to replace them.
