Madelyn Cline is addressing viewers’ fixation on her body and appearance throughout her time on Netflix‘s Outer Banks.

In a cover story with Allure magazine, the Glass Onion actress said issues of body image constitute her “Roman Empire,” referencing the meme about how men obsessively think about the fallen republic. Cline has previously also been candid about her past with disordered eating.

“People love to pay attention to weight specifically,” she told the publication. “It’s very bizarre to me. From season to season on Outer Banks, my appearance has changed with lots of factors: stress, breakups, healthy or unhealthy habits with food. It’s normal life. But the camera, swear to God, picks up everything. Like, damn. Can I not be on my period? Can I not have a beer the night before?”

She continued, “In the comment sections, we are not always family.”

Outer Banks, the runaway YA adventure hit for the streamer, is currently in production for its fifth and final season. In an interview with Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast that also released today, Cline discussed her bittersweet feelings about wrapping the show, which first premiered in 2020.

“We’ve been in the thick of it for six or seven years. It kicks our asses. It’s a tough show to shoot, it’s very physically demanding,” she explained. “Well, I always come back, and I’m like, ‘Oh f—, I forgot how much stamina you need to have to keep up with this show and the elements that we shoot in.’”

As Cline tackles future projects, like the forthcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot and “heady and heavy” Day Drinker opposite Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz, she said there’s an “attitude of gratitude” from the cast given the show’s launchpad for their careers.

“It’s been the better part of my 20s, and it is a security blanket I always go back to and that I always know is going to be there and is in a way, feels like having your training wheels taken off,” she said.
