Anne Hathaway is the latest celebrity to wade into the cutout denim trend, stepping out on July 9 in a pair of Area NYC jeans with a statement-making chainlink cutout running diagonally across the front.
The 42-year-old let her pants do the talking, styling them with a low key black racerback tank top, a blue dad cap, and black cowboy boots. Keeping with the monochromatic theme, she wore silver jewelry (a stack of silver cuffs and a silver beaded necklace) and what looks to be the Valentino Garavani VLogo bag, the chain handle matching the motif on her pants.
The actor was photographed in the statement-making look while out for a stroll in New York City with her husband of 13 years, Adam Shulman.
Hathaway joins a number of celebrities who have tried the cutout trend—which, by the way, is perfect for those hot, hot summer days, when regular old denim can be feel suffocating—including Taylor Swift, who wore a pair of butterfly cutout Area jeans a full two years ago, and Blake Lively, who wore a $19,000 Valentino pair of cutout floral jeans while promoting It Ends With Us last summer. Hathaway’s pair are down right affordable compared to Lively’s, as they’re currently on sale for $698.
Like Anne Hathaway, Lively styled her statement denim with a racerback tank and let her pants do the heavy lifting of the outfit.
There are several variations of the cutout jeans trend, from the more extreme, like Rag & Bone’s Logan floral cutout jeans, to the more modest, like Iro’s Joce jeans, which feature cutouts along the outside seam. But let us be the first to warn anyone who attempts this fun and flirty denim trend: Be careful not to put your toe through one of the holes while putting them on and accidentally rip a huge, irreparable hole through the knee. Love, a millennial.
