Green-Card Sponsorship Skyrockets as US Employers Offer Visa Support

The number of job postings that offer green-card sponsorship has increased, analysis shows.

According to a Hiring Lab analysis, ads posted on Indeed that mention visa support have almost quadrupled since 2021.

However, jobs offering sponsorship still make up only a tiny fraction of ads placed.

Why It Matters

Immigrants are key to the U.S. economy, and many bipartisan groups have called for migrants to take on jobs in the U.S.

The Office of Homeland Security Statistics estimated there were 12.8 million lawful permanent residents, or green-card holders, living in the U.S. on January 1, 2024.

However, since beginning his second term, President Donald Trump has overseen a crackdown on immigration. While much attention has focused on the administration targeting those without legal status, the administration has revoked green cards belonging to those it views as having broken the law, and there have been reported cases of green-card holders being detained.

What To Know

In June 2021, the share of jobs that offered green-card support fell to 0.04 percent. This increased to a peak of 0.16 percent in October 2024, then fell slightly to 0.14 percent in May 2025. That means the job posts that offer visa support has increased by almost 285 percent from the pre-pandemic baseline to October 2024.

In terms of geographical distribution, 20 percent of job postings offering immigration support in May 2025 were based in New York. Other states that had a relatively high proportion of visa-supporting job ads were California and Illinois.

Meanwhile, medical fields were most likely to offer visa support, with physician and surgeon jobs making up 3.2 percent of the jobs that offered visa support posted in May 2025.

Indeed also analyzed job seeker search information and found that the share of searches on Indeed’s U.S. site that mentioned visas sponsorship reached a high of 0.1 percent in January 2025 but has since fallen to its lowest levels since 2022. The majority of job searches looking for visa support come from the U.K. (12.9 percent), closely followed by India (12.6 percent) and Brazil (10.4 percent.)

What People Are Saying

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, on X, formerly Twitter, on May 5: “Green cards and visas will be revoked if an alien breaks the law.”

It said in a later post: “USCIS works alongside our @DHSgov and @StateDept partners each day to keep America, and Americans, safe. From designating foreign terrorist organizations to imposing sanctions, we’re taking action to protect and secure our nation for your families, friends, and future.”

What Happens Next

With the Trump administration cracking down on green-card holders, it is likely that it will continue to revoke green cards and visas, potentially affecting employers’ choice to advertise visa support.

Meanwhile, the processing time for replacing green cards is surging, affecting those with cards hoping to renew their citizenship.
