The Philadelphia Eagles have one of the top interior defensive linemen on their roster in Jalen Carter.

Just two years into his NFL career, it’s become apparent that Carter could be nearing elite status if he hasn’t reached it already after his sophomore campaign with the team.

Soon, the Eagles are going to have to make a contract decision on Carter, and the Eagles are seemingly preparing for it early, hence the reason behind certain moves over the offseason.

Key players parted ways with the team, and the Eagles made some decisions to work around the cap. After year three for Carter, there’s a good chance Howie Roseman and the front office will enter negotiations with their star first-rounder.

On a list of 32 players to pay attention to regarding their contracts, Carter was the key name from Philadelphia, according to The Athletic.

“Howie Roseman spent the offseason tidying up the organization’s books partly to accommodate what could very well be a record-setting contract for their star interior defensive lineman,” writes Brooks Kubena.

“The degree of his dominance in 2025 will dictate where he’ll eventually land in relation to Kansas City’s Chris Jones, the NFL‘s highest-paid interior lineman at $31.75 million. Owner Jeffrey Lurie authorizes Roseman to set the market instead of chasing it. I’d expect the Eagles to again extend another core player sooner rather than later.”

Carter slid down to the Eagles at No. 9 during the 2023 NFL Draft. He immediately inked a reported $21.8 million contract for four seasons.

When Carter landed with the Eagles, he wasn’t a full-time starter off the bat. During his rookie season, he appeared in 51 percent of the defensive snaps. During his first season, Carter accounted for 33 tackles, landing nine hits on the quarterback, and registering six sacks.

In year two, Carter’s snap percentage jumped to 84 percent. With more playing time, he produced 42 tackles, 12 of which were for a loss, and landed 16 hits on the quarterback, along with 4.5 sacks. He finished the regular season with an All-Pro and Pro Bowl nod.

During the Eagles’ Super Bowl run, Carter combined nine tackles, seven hits on the QB and two sacks. He was a part of multiple key plays throughout the championship-winning run.

Carter is primed for a big season in year three, and he has a good chance of landing a record-breaking deal when the time to negotiate approaches.
