EXCLUSIVE: As a sequel to Dirty Dancing is in the works, the resort that inspired the original is getting its own small-screen treatment.

A scripted series set at Grossinger’s Catskill Resort Hotel, which inspired the movie as well as The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, is in the works from Alan Zweibel, an original writer on Saturday Night Live and co-creator of It’s Garry Shandling’s Show, and Dr. Ruth Show producer Harris F.B. Salomon.

It is the latest project set at the Borscht Belt resort in upstate New York after a documentary from Bungalow Media + Entertainment.

The Mountains begins on the Fourth of July weekend, 1950, when America was dancing into a new era. It is the untold, multigenerational story of Jennie and Elaine Grossinger, the formidable matriarchs who transformed a humble Catskills boarding house into an empire of leisure, elegance, and resistance. Fiercely visionary, these two women not only defined a resort but symbolised Jewish-American ascent, female leadership, and unyielding defiance in the face of exclusion and hate.

It will trace their rise amid America’s postwar optimism, exploring how Grossinger’s became not just a resort, but a stage for the greatest entertainers of a generation, a haven for families seeking identity and dignity, and a quiet front in the fight against antisemitism and racism.

Zweibel, who spent his childhood summers at Grossinger’s, has also produced series including Curb Your Enthusiasm and is currently working on a movie with director Barry Levinson. Salomon, who also produced Afterdrive with Denis Leary, runs Atlantic Overseas Pictures, which holds the exclusive rights to the Grossinger’s story.

Salomon and Zweibel will take out to broadcasters and streamers soon.

“This series isn’t a reimagining,” said Salomon. “It’s a resurrection. Of a place. Of a people. Of an America that danced, fought, loved, and built something beautiful in the mountains.”
