A suspect connected to a freeway shooting and firearm brandishing incident that took place within moments of each other in the Inland Empire has been arrested by the California Highway Patrol.
According to a CHP media release, officers from the department’s San Bernardino Area station were notified of a possible shooting on the 210 Freeway in San Bernardino on Tuesday afternoon around 2:34 p.m.
The officers were told that the victim was a 12-year-old boy who was shot and taken to a hospital with a bullet wound to his leg.
“Investigators responded to the hospital and contacted the victim, who had been riding in the rear passenger seat of a silver SUV when an unknown suspect opened fire,” CHP’s release indicates, adding that bullet holes were found in the SUV.
As the investigation unfolded, detectives discovered a separate incident involving the brandishing of a firearm that occurred around the same time on the same freeway near the border of San Bernardino and Rialto.
A witness to that incident, which occurred on the 210 between Pepper Avenue and State Street, provided CHP with a vehicle description that led them to identify the car as a gray 2010 Honda Civic. The witness also recalled seeing the silver SUV involved in the shooting swerve across lanes and exit at State Street, officials said.
Investigators continued their probe into the incidents and were able to locate the suspect vehicle near Victorville with the help of Flock Safety cameras. The suspect, Geovanni Malik Patterson, was arrested and booked into the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Central Detention Center; authorities found a loaded 9mm pistol underneath the driver’s seat during a search of the vehicle.
Patterson, 20, was charged with multiple felonies, including attempted murder, shooting at an occupied vehicle and brandishing a firearm.
