EXCLUSIVE: Richard Tulk-Hart has left drama label Buccaneer Media. Tulk-Hart was co-CEO of the Marcella producer and has set up Volteo Media, a consultancy focused on the scripted TV biz.
Tulk-Hart joined Buccaneer in 2019, serving as co-CEO alongside Tony Wood. He joined from A+E Networks where, as MD for international, he worked across distribution, formats and co-production. At Cineflix-backed Buccaneer he helped tee up drama series including Acorn TV’s Whitstable Pearl, ITV’s Crime – adapted from the Irvine Welsh novel – as well as The Doll Factory, The Burning Girls and The Crow Girl for Paramount+. He also worked on big international co-pros including the Leonard Cohen drama So Long Marianne.
His new outfit Volteo will provide consultancy on individual projects as well as full slates. Funding drama series has become increasingly complex, and now frequently requires a combination of partners, often hailing from different territories. Tulk-Hart’s Volteo will offer EP services and also focus on pre-sales and co-pro advice for those working up scripted projects.
“The old commissioning and financing models are no longer fit for purpose,” he said. “There’s an opportunity right now to work across companies and borders to help get ambitious projects made without adding permanent overheads to businesses. That’s exactly where Volteo Media comes in.”
Deadline understands that Volteo’s first client will be Tulk-Hart’s former employer, Buccaneer. In some cases, and notably for the bigger budget projects, it will help attach on and off-screen talent to dramas. It will also look at innovative funding models as scripted producers struggle to get shows financed.
“There’s a real shift happening,” Tulk-Hart said. “The necessity for multiple partners on a show is now the norm, not a nice-to-have. I’ve been working in that space for years and I know how to bring the right people together.”
Prior to Buccaneer and A+E, Tulk-Hart was at Miramax, Fremantle, and IMG.
