Ritz cracker sandwiches recalled over potentially ‘life-threatening’ error

(WJW) – The manufacturer of Ritz cracker sandwiches has issued an urgent recall due to a labeling error that could cause a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction.

Mondelēz Global LLC is voluntarily recalling certain cartons of Ritz cracker sandwiches, as seen in a notice posted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website. The cartons contain individually wrapped packs of Ritz sandwiches. But the packs themselves may identify the Ritz sandwiches as having a cheese filling, when they instead contain peanut butter filling.

The recall alert explains that the larger, outer cartons that contain the individually wrapped packs are indeed labeled correctly, with language specifying the correct peanut butter sandwiches contained within, as well as an allergen warning.

The individually wrapped packs, on the other hand, may not carry that information.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts may risk serious or life-threatening allergic reactions by consuming this product,” reads the alert.

Mondelēz Global LLC said the issue stems from a “supplier error” concerning the packaging for the individually wrapped packs.

“Corrective actions are being taken to help ensure this issue does not recur,” states the recall alert.

The recalled cracker sandwiches were sold nationwide. Here’s what to check for:

The individually wrapped packages, which have been incorrectly labeled as the cheese variety, were packaged in 1.38-ounce packs and contain a UPC reading 0 44000 00211 4. The packs also bear a best-by date of Nov. 1, 2025–Nov. 9, 2025, or Jan. 2, 2026–Jan. 22, 2026. There’s also a plant code reading “AE.”

The FDA says anyone with peanut allergies should avoid eating the affected cracker sandwiches and discard them. Customers can also contact customer service representatives at Mondelēz.

There had been no reports of severe reactions as of Tuesday, according to Mondelēz.
