The New York Yankees are in the midst of a brutal skid that has seen them give up the lead in the American League East division.
With the Yankees suffering a cold snap at the plate and another harsh pitching setback with a season ending injury to pitcher Clarke Schmidt, the team’s losing streak grew to six games on Saturday. And even if they’re able to turn things around in the second half of this season, they face some significant questions in the outfield going forward.
The Yankees have enjoyed a breakout season from outfielder Trent Grisham, but Max Goodman of NJ.com predicted that means they will lose him in the offseason.
“Trent Grisham is a free agent at the end of the season, so he’ll likely seek out a multi-year deal elsewhere,” Goodman wrote. “He’s made himself a lot of money with the way he’s performed this season in pinstripes.”
The same could be said for Cody Bellinger, who was acquired in a trade with the Chicago Cubs and will have the chance to opt out of his deal at the end of this debut campaign with the Yankees. As a result, Goodman suggested the Yankees could pair superstar Aaron Judge with young slugger Jasson Dominguez and top-ranked prospect Spencer Jones in the outfield next year.
“As much as Jones has had his low points down on the farm, he’s had a career-best campaign this year,” Goodman noted. “If the Yankees hold on to those two youngsters, there’s a real scenario where both end up in the starting outfield beginning next spring next to Judge.”
Jones has been one of the most tantalizing young pieces in the Yankees system since he was drafted in the first round three years ago, with a similar build to Judge and similar power at the plate. Since a recent promotion to Triple-A, he has slashed .393/.486/.821.
If he can maintain that level of production, Jones might find himself on the big-league roster soon with Grisham playing himself into a long-term contract somewhere else.
