HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — A former WHNT reporter and staple in the Guntersville community has died.
Bruce Underwood was a staple in the communities he served. Underwood had been doing the morning radio show at WTWX 95.9 in Guntersville since October 3, 1958.
He was signed on to WHNT in 1963 to be a reporter for Marshall County.
Congressman Robert Aderholt posted on Facebook following Underwood’s passing, saying, “I’m sad to learn of the passing of Marshall County radio legend Bruce Underwood. He had been on the air in Guntersville since the 1950s, and while he had been off his regular morning radio program after a fall last year, he was still voicing commercials. Bruce was also the first Sand Mountain reporter for WHNT-TV when they signed on in 1963. I send my prayers to his family, his church family at Guntersville Church of Christ and his radio family who had listened to him for decades.”
Underwood also volunteered with the National Weather Service in Huntsville! NWS said in 2023 that he worked with the department starting in the 1950s. “For just shy of 24,000 days since October 1958, he has provided us with high/low temps and how much rain fell each day. In that time, he’s measured more than 272 FEET of rain and more than 8 FEET of snow. We’re so thankful for his dedication to our cooperative weather observer program (and the climate record for Guntersville),” NWS posted.
Underwood did it all, as he was also a staple at his church, the Guntersville Church of Christ.
News 19 has reached out to the radio station for a statement about his time working in Guntersville.
