As training camp nears, the Washington Commanders still find themselves with off-field drama hanging over their heads. After opting not to partake in minicamp, wide receiver Terry McLaurin continues to hold out in search of a new contract.
McLaurin is in the final year of his current deal and is eager to lock down a long-term commitment with the franchise. This comes on the heels of the veteran wide receiver having a career year. Paired with a new young dynamic quarterback Jayden Daniels, he tallied his fifth straight 1,000-yard season and racked up a career-high 13 touchdowns.
Since this ordeal began, the Commanders have maintained a positive mindset that things will work themselves out before the season gets underway. However, most updates regarding the situation have not been encouraging. The latest discourse about McLaurin’s holdout revealed he is still at odds with the front office as they continue to negotiate.

“Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin is ‘not happy with where things are with an extension,’ according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Fowler said Sunday on SportsCenter the Commanders ‘have a couple of weeks here to make progress’ before they risk seeing McLaurin’s holdout continue into training camp.”
This update comes on the heels of one of the NFL‘s top insiders also having lackluster things to say about McLaurin’s holdout. Last week ESPN’s Adam Schefter was a guest on The Pat McAfee Show to discuss various topics across the league. While speaking about the Commanders’ star, he cited that minimal progress has been made when it comes to him getting a new contract and rejoining the team.
“There’s no update which is the update. And that’s the problem,” Schefter said. “There really is quite a difference and a gap between what both sides would want. They have not made any progress.”

For the Commanders, the clock is ticking to get a deal done. Fresh off reaching the NFC Championship game and making offseason upgrades, they’re eager to contend right now. That said, the team isn’t going to achieve its goals if this situation is still lingering in the background. McLaurin is a foundational piece to the franchise and a key component of the offense. Because of this, they’ll need the star receiver committed and locked in if Washington is going to continue on its upward trajectory.
