The Miami Dolphins may have brought in All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and Pro Bowl tight end Darren Waller, but they still have a glaring hole in their secondary. The team traded All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey to the Pittsburgh Steelers in an exchange that landed them Fitzpatrick, which leaves the position lacking.

Kader Kohou has emerged as a solid starter, but there are concerns with Storm Duck and rookie Jason Marshall Jr., who is slated as a starter on the current depth chart. There is a growing belief that the Dolphins will target a veteran cornerback, and their potential top target has now spoken out about not being signed.

Former Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore remains unsigned by a team. He most recently spent a season with the Minnesota Vikings, where he secured 56 tackles, one interception, and nine passes defended in the 2024 season.

Gilmore spoke on “The Money Down Podcast,” where he got candid about joining a new team in 2025.

“I want to play this year, it’s just got to be the right situation,” he said on The Money Down podcast. “It’s got to be the right situation for me. I’m not just gonna sign anywhere. … I still love the game. I still can contribute. It’s just got to be the right place.”

Gilmore is a proven veteran and is arguably the top available cornerback on the market, but it does sound like he may want to wait on where he signs. Considering he has 13 years in the NFL, he might want to see if a contender comes calling.

Still, the Dolphins would do well to speak to Gilmore about potentially joining the team.

As the stalwart defender stated, he can still contribute. Even in this 13th season with the Vikings, Gilmore only allowed a 61.9 completion percentage and 94.1 passer rating to opposing quarterbacks.

Gilmore did give up four touchdowns, but that is nowhere near the worst in the NFL. He also posted a 55.8 completion percentage and 82.7 passer rating in 2023, while also giving up four touchdowns.

Gilmore needs to clean up giving up touchdowns, but again, those stats are not at all terrible. He remains a solid coverage corner, and one the Dolphins could use in the 2025 season.

Cornerback-needy teams might also be biding time until training camp begins and they can evaluate their talent at the position, and determine whether more veteran help is needed. Either way, the Dolphins might want to give Gilmore a call before another team wants to sign him.
