Jim Hill has been covering sports on Southland TV since the Carter administration, and he’s about to get a big career honor. The KCBS/KCAL stalwart will receive the 2025 Los Angeles Area Emmy Governors Award.

Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego made the surprise announcement during a KCAL newscast Thursday. Hill will be feted during the 77th Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards on July 26 at L.A. Skirball Cultural Center..

“Jim is a legendary and beloved figure in sports broadcasting — a trusted voice and a true pioneer in Los Angeles area news,” said Abrego. “His decades of dedication, excellence and influence have left an indelible mark on the industry; and we are proud to celebrate his extraordinary contributions to our Southland television community.”

After a career in college and pro football — he played defensive back for the NFL’s San Diego Chargers, Green Bay Packers and Cleveland Browns — Hill joined CBS2 (then KNXT) as a sportscaster in 1976. He spent 11 years with the CBS O&O before moving to rival KABC-TV. After four years there, he rejoined CBS2 in March 1992 and has been at the station and its duopoly-mate KCAL ever since.

He currently appears on CBS2’s weekday 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. newscasts and hosts the weekend editions of Sports Central. Hill also has covered worldwide sporting events, including the Super Bowl and Winter Olympics and has hosted pay-per-view boxing telecasts on Showtime.

Hill received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006 and was inducted into the Southern California Sports Broadcasters Hall of Fame four years later.

The Governors Award is presented to an individual, company or organization that has made an outstanding, innovative and visionary achievement in the arts, sciences or management of television as well as a substantial contribution to the greater Los Angeles area.
