Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is widely regarded as one of the best coaches in the NFL. He has never led the team to a losing season and has made the playoffs more often than he has missed them.

Despite how good he has been, the Steelers have not had much playoff success with him. He won a Super Bowl in Pittsburgh during his second season as the head coach in 2008. However, there has not been much recent playoff success.

In fact, the last time that the Steelers went beyond the Wild Card round of the postseason was all the way back in the 2017 NFL season.

While the national media has nothing but good things to say about Tomlin, his former players are a bit of a different story.

A new report has come out that offers reason for concern regarding Tomlin.

CBS Sports reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala recently spoke out about Tomlin. She reported that many former players bite their tongues when speaking about their former head coach.

“There are many, many former players that I have spoken to that have bitten their tongues about their experience with Mike,” Kinkhabwala said. “There’s a huge disconnect, right? Because the national media is in love with Mike Tomlin, and the national media never brings up the playoff drought.”

Tomlin runs a very tight ship. Sometimes, that kind of coaching style does not go over well with the players.

Even though this report does not paint Tomlin in the best light, recent comments from Aaron Rodgers about why he signed with Pittsburgh show a different side of the longtime head coach.

“I think it starts with Mike Tomlin,” Rodgers said when revealing why he signed with the Steelers. “I’ve been a fan of his for a long time. There’s a few iconic franchises in the NFL. I played for one of them for 18 years. This is another one of those. There’s something special about — obviously this area, so many great quarterbacks are from Pittsburgh.”

Since taking over as the head coach in Pittsburgh, Tomlin has led his teams to an overall regular season record of 183-107-2. The team has refrained from moving on from him despite recent playoff struggles, showing how much the franchise values him.

It will be interesting to see how the Steelers fare during the 2025 NFL season. They have gone all-in on competing for a championship this season and it’s up to Tomlin to get the most out of the group and make a run.
