Arrowhead Games Studios announced on Thursday that its 2024 smash hit Helldivers 2 will be coming to Xbox Series X on August 26. “We know gamers have been asking for this for some time and we are so excited to bring more Helldivers into our game. We have so much more in store for the future months and years — and the more players we have, the more stories we can tell!” Game Director Mikael Eriksson said in the announcement on Xbox Wire.
While Microsoft has gone third-party with some of its formerly Xbox console exclusives, like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Hi-Fi Rush, Sony has rarely published its first-party titles on its rival’s platforms, with the MLB: The Show series being a notable exception. Time will tell if Helldivers 2’s release on Xbox will end up as a one-off exception or the start of a new publishing strategy for Sony. The game will also have cross-play available across platforms.
Coincidentally, or perhaps intentionally, Helldivers 2 arrives on Xbox the same day Gears of War makes its debut on PlayStation with Gears of War: Reloaded, a remaster of the first game. It’s not clear yet if Helldivers 2 will also get a physical release on Xbox or will only be available digitally.
Helldivers 2 launched in February 2024 for PlayStation 5 and PC, though its journey on PC hasn’t been without PSN-induced bumps in the road. Sony quickly reversed its reviled PSN account requirements for PC users, which would have prohibited Helldivers from playing in regions where PSN isn’t available. The game was heavily review-bombed on Steam at the time, and recently developer Arrowhead cheekily acknowledged those negative reviews with a free in-game cape for players.
