Rising American tennis star Taylor Fritz, currently number five in the world, booked his place in the third round of Wimbledon on Wednesday by defeating Canadian rival Gabriel Diallo in a hard-fought contest.

Fritz is now the fifth favorite to win the prestigious tournament, with leading bookmakers offering odds of between 16/1 (5.9 percent) and 22/1 (4.3 percent) on his overall victory.

Newsweek reached out to a representative for Fritz via email for comment outside of office hours.

Why It Matters

No American has won the men’s singles title at Wimbledon, one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world, since Pete Sampras in 2000.

While Fritz has won 10 ATP Tour singles titles, he has yet to win a major; however, he did reach the final of the U.S. Open in 2024.

What To Know

Bookmaker Spreadex is offering odds of 16/1 (5.9 percent) on Fritz winning the 2025 men’s Wimbledon singles title. This places him behind Spanish favorite Carlos Alcaraz on 6/5 (45.5 percent), Italy’s Jannik Sinner with 9/5 (35.7 percent), Serbian legend Novak Djokovic with 13/2 (13.3 percent) and Britain’s Jake Draper on 14/1 (6.7 percent).

Ladbrokes and William Hill both give Fritz odds of 18/1 (5.3 percent) on winning Wimbledon this year. For the former, he is preceded by 2024 Wimbledon winner Alcaraz on 11/10 (47.6 percent), Sinner with 13/8 (38.1 percent), Djokovic on 11/2 (15.4 percent) and Draper with 10/1 (9.1 percent).

With William Hill, the four favorites are Alcaraz on 6/5 (45.5 percent), Sinner with 7/4 (36.4 percent), Djokovic with 11/2 (15.4 percent) and Draper on 11/1 (8.3 percent).

Unibet gives Fritz a 22/1 (4.3 percent) chance of winning Wimbledon this year, behind Alcaraz on 6/5 (45.5 percent), Sinner with 9/5 (35.7 percent), Djokovic on 13/2 (13.3 percent) and Draper with 13/1 (7.1 percent).

All odds are accurate as of 8:30 a.m. ET on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Draper beat Canada’s Diallo 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(0), 4-6, 6-3 to reach Wimbledon’s third round, in three hours and six minutes.

Monday, the first day of Wimbledon, saw Fritz face France’s Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. However, the fifth set was played on Tuesday because officials decided they didn’t have enough time before the competition’s 11 p.m. BST curfew.

Fritz came back from behind to win 6/7, 6/7, 6/4, 7/6 and 6/4.

What People Are Saying

Speaking after his victory on Wednesday, Fritz said: “That’s an incredibly hard match. The fourth set – I don’t think there’s much that I did wrong at all and I kind of felt like that’s the way the match was going: I was going to have to play near perfect when I got my opportunities. I’m happy to get through that.”

Portuguese tennis commentator José Morgado said on X, formerly Twitter, that Fritz is now the “clear favorite to reach the semifinals in his quarter.”

What Happens Next

Fritz is due to play against Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Friday at 11 a.m. BST (6 a.m. ET).
