PHOENIX — Drivers in the East Valley were met with dusty conditions as monsoon activity popped up on Wednesday evening.

A dust storm warning was issued for the Interstate 10 freeway approaching Mesa around 5:50 p.m. that lasted until 6:45 p.m. MST, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The warning was issued due to blowing dust leading to near-zero visibility and dangerous driving conditions.

Areas impacted in the warning include Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Queen Creek and Maricopa.

Monsoon chances for Wednesday night

The NWS forecasts a 30% chance of rainfall on Wednesday night in Phoenix, and a slight chance of showers and storms after 5 a.m. on Thursday.

What to do if driving in a monsoon?

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to never drive in a dust storm. If drivers encounter the storm, ADOT advises those to follow these steps:

  • Slow down and safely pull of the road.
  • Turn off all lights, including flashers.
  • Set your parking brake.
  • Take your foot off the brake.
  • Stay in the vehicle and wait for the storm to pass.
