HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — House Republicans are pushing forward with the Senate-approved spending bill, as President Trump’s proposed Fourth of July signing deadline approaches.

“There’s never a perfect piece of legislation, but this is a really good piece of legislation because it keeps taxes from going up on the American people,” said Rep. Robert Aderholt.

The Congressman from North Alabama said he wants to avoid the billion-dollar tax increase that would come with the expiration of the current tax plan.

“It also does away with tax on tips and the tax on overtime,” said Aderholt, referencing the “One Big, Beautiful Bill.”

With expected tax cuts in the spending bill, middle-income households could see as much as a $1,000 increase in the income they take home, according to analysis from the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO). However, the same report claims lower-income families will lose money and available resources.

Aderholt called concerns about cuts to services, like Medicaid, “overblown.”

“I feel like the people who need it will be able to keep it,” Aderholt said. “Obviously, if someone is trying to game the system, or if they are just trying to abuse the system, I think there are some problems with that.”

The CBO estimates the spending bill would cut one trillion dollars from SNAP and Medicaid benefits over the next 10 years. Aderholt said that, if given the opportunity, he would like to see more cuts made in some areas.

“I was glad to see a year stop on Planned Parenthood funding, and I would like to see it go beyond that,” Aderholt said. “I wish it was more than a year, but it is what it is. We will have to go back and work on it next time.”

Aderholt said he expects the bill to be passed, but he is unsure when it will happen.
