You already knew that prep is back for the summer of 2025, and Olivia Rodrigo’s red gingham dress demonstrates exactly why we should all be fully endorsing this trend.
The singer and her British actor boyfriend Louis Partridge, were photographed at Wimbledon on July 2. Partridge was dressed in classic English fancy-pants style, while Rodrigo embraced the vintage preppiness inherent to gingham. It’s true that gingham, especially in red, is most commonly associated with picnic blankets and cafe curtains, but in a shirt dress like Rodrigo’s, the checked pattern takes on a certain Jackie O quality. So, perfect for a day at Wimbledon.
The crisp, short-sleeved dress has buttons all the way down the front, and Rodrigo styled it buttoned up to the top of the classic shirt collar. Completing her look, Rodrigo wore equally on-trend narrow sunglasses, and added a red suede Khaite purse.
You may find it coincidental or not, depending on your proclivity to Swiftie-related conspiracy theories, that Taylor Swift also wore red gingham to watch a tennis match back in September of 2024. Swift opted for a swingy minidress from Reformation to watch the U.S. Open.
But that’s probably overthinking things. As already stated, classic prep is one of the summer’s hottest trends, as are other retro-classic patterns like polka dots, which have been spotted on the likes of Kaia Gerber and Sydney Sweeney. (What is gingham if not polka dots in a funkier font, really?) On its own, gingham is already shaping up to be this summer’s go-to print. Just ask Emma Watson or Sofia Richie Grainge—who recently doubled down on gingham by pairing an oversized gingham shirt with a matching hair kerchief.
Plus, it is a matter of record that Olivia Rodrigo loves a summer micro trend. Just weeks ago she was photographed in polka dot shorts with black leather boots.
