There was a princess at Pride 2025 in Oslo: Martha Louise of Norway accompanied her eldest daughter, Maud Angelica Behn, to the parade Sunday. Behn is the daughter of Martha Louise and her first husband Ari Behn, who died by suicide at age 47 in 2019. The 22-year-old Behn, granddaughter of King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway, is fifth in line to the throne.

On Sunday, she took advantage of her day at Pride to speak publicly about her bisexuality for the first time. She shared a series of colorful photos on Instagram, in which she is dressed in purple, fuchsia, and blue stripes, mirroring the colors of the bisexual Pride flag. In a caption, Maud wrote, “Happy Pride from a bisexual person! This year’s Pride was absolutely amazing and there was so much love.”

Maud Angelica is the first member of the Norwegian royal family to publicly come out. Her mother Martha Louise decided to show support for her daughter by attending Norway’s largest LGBTIQ+ festival, alongside her second husband, American shaman Durek Verrett. She shared photos on social media as well.

“Love is never wrong. This Pride Month, I want to honor the courage it takes to live your truth,” the princess wrote in her own caption, posting photos and videos of the special day. “During Pride I see a deep capacity for love—love that doesn’t ask for permission or explanation. There’s something profoundly beautiful about daring to love who you love, even when the world tells you to be quiet, to shrink, or to hide. But love isn’t meant to be hidden. It’s meant to be celebrated, lived, and shared in all its wonderful forms. Pride is not just about identity. It’s about freedom. It’s about the bravery to be fully yourself in a world that often doesn’t make that easy. To everyone out there still trying to find the words or the courage: You are seen, you are loved, and you never have to apologise for who you are.”

What the Norwegian Royal House thinks of the first brave royal coming out is unknown. What is certain is that Martha Louise is on her daughter’s side. After all, the princess, who has always sought freedom, has never been afraid to challenge her family. First, in 2002, she married the father of her three daughters (Maud Angelica, Leah Isadora, and Emma Tallulah): Ari Behn, a character considered “troublesome,” who would die on Christmas Day 2019, a couple of years after accusing Kevin Spacey of sexual misconduct. (Spacey did not respond to Behn’s allegation at the time. Vanity Fair has reached out to Spacey’s representatives for comment.) Then, in 2022, Martha Louise renounced royal duties to devote herself to alternative medicine and clairvoyance with her then fiancé Verrett, a self-proclaimed “shaman.” Some among the Norwegian public disapproved of the marriage and it faced opposition in the Scandinavian kingdom. Yet the two, in spite of everything and everyone, became husband and wife in August 2024.
