The city of Los Angeles has paid nearly $1 billion in liability claims since 2020, and that threshold could be crossed once this year’s figures are released.
City Controller Kenneth Mejia debuted the Liability Claims Dashboard on Monday, showing that since fiscal year 2020, $940.1 million has been paid out.
That figure, however, only goes through March of this year, meaning the numbers for April through June haven’t been released.
If the fourth quarter of the fiscal year trends like the previous three quarters, that’s likely to add another $70 million or so to the total, which would bring it over $1 billion.
The dashboard also breaks down the payouts by department and by category.
The Los Angeles Police Department has caused payouts of more than $345 million, leading all city departments. Street Services was second with more than $164 million.
The biggest category, however, is dangerous condition, which the data shows covers everything from downed trees to damaged roadways and covers multiple departments. Payouts in that category total nearly $298 million.
Civil rights violations and excessive force payouts came in second with more than $173 million.
