A special investigations unit in Orange County has taken thousands of pounds of illegal fireworks off the streets ahead of the 4th of July holiday.
Costa Mesa Police Department SIU detectives found the illegal contraband, as well as a gun and narcotics, during four separate operations in which sellers offering prohibited fireworks were contacted.
“Altogether, detectives have seized a total of 1,339 pounds of illegal fireworks, one firearm, 2,900 counterfeit Xanax pills, an ounce of cocaine, and made three arrests,” the Police Department posted on Facebook Monday.
Police reminded the public that selling illegal fireworks is a felony and possessing or using illegal fireworks is a misdemeanor punishable by a $1,000 fine and/or jail time.
Sales of Safe & Sane fireworks are authorized in Costa Mesa between June 30 and July 4th. Those fireworks can be discharged only between the hours of 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. from July 2 through July 4.
“Please be a good neighbor, don’t use illegal fireworks. If it takes off from the ground, if it does not have the Safe & Sane logo, it’s not legal!” the post reads.
Illegal fireworks can be reported by calling the Police Department at 714-754-5252.
