PELL CITY, Ala. (WIAT) — A video from Pell City Fire Chief Tim Kurzejeski shows what he said is the result of a lightning strike to a boat with people on it Sunday.

According to the Pell City Fire Department, the people on that boat in Logan Martin Lake were taken by a nearby vessel to the closest dock, which happened to be right next door to Bruce Breland.

“They stopped right here at my neighbor’s dock, and the guy carried him all the way up to my next-door neighbor’s, which was tremendous,” Breland said. “Saved his life.”

Breland said first responders swarmed his neighborhood and got right to work on the people who were injured by the strike.

“I think four of them actually got struck, and the driver of the boat got it the worse,” Breland said. “He was the son. The father got some burns, and then the driver of the boat that got it the worse.”

For Breland, the strike has turned into a learning situation. He said from now on, he is going pay closer attention to the weather when he is out on the lake.

“You know you better get to some cover somewhere. It doesn’t matter where,” Breland said. “Just pull off because when you’re out on the lake, it’s just you, so you are going to attract the lightning.

According to the PCFD, one of the men who was on the boat when it was struck by lightning remains in a hospital as of Monday evening. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency identified that man, who was operating the boat, as 19-year-old Springville resident Craig Morris.
