The popularity of ambulatory surgery centers has seen a continuous rise in recent years. These same-day surgery centers are more convenient and less expensive for patients by providing care—including diagnostic and preventive procedures—without the need for an overnight stay. Less invasive procedures such as cataract surgery, colonoscopy, gallbladder removal and hernia repair, among others, are common at these outpatient facilities.
According to a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, 90-day costs were lower at ambulatory surgery centers versus hospitals. For example, total knee arthroplasty, one procedure often performed at these centers, costs patients almost $2,500 less than at hospitals. Meanwhile, 90-day emergency department visit rates were also lower for ambulatory care patients than hospital patients—8.9 percent versus 12.7 percent.
Because of this, Newsweek and Statista are pleased to have the opportunity for the sixth year to evaluate America’s Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers for 2026.
Last year, our list encompassed 650 facilities based on the recommendations of medical professionals and analysis of facility performance data. This year, we aim to provide the same thorough evaluation of the expanding industry.
Newsweek and Statista appreciate your participation in our survey.
