The Chicago Cubs came into the season with a hole in their starting rotation. Following some crushing injuries, including a season-ending surgery for Justin Steele, the hole in the Cubs’ pitching staff has only grown larger.
Chicago will likely need to turn to the trade block to fill the void on the roster at this point. Luckily for the Cubs, there are set to be quite a few talented pitchers on the market this season.
FanSided’s Aldo Soto recently suggested that Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcántara should be the Cubs’ top trade deadline target this season.
“Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcántara should still be the Cubs’ No. 1 target at the trade deadline. He not only presents the Cubs with the chance to acquire an ace-potential starter for this year, but beyond 2025, too,” Soto wrote. “Alcántara is under team control through 2027, which shouldn’t be overlooked by the Cubs because they’ll have a few pending free agents in the rotation after next season.
“If Alcántara continues to his recent stretch of good pitching, then the Cubs should not hesitate in their pursuit of the 2022 NL Cy Young winner. Imanaga and Alcántara would be a formidable 1-2 punch against any opponent in the postseason.”
Alcántara got off to a slow start this year as he looked to bounce back from Tommy John surgery, but he’s since returned to the level he was before the crushing injury.
The righty would be the dream addition for the Cubs. Rather than being an expiring talent like Erick Fedde or Seth Lugo, Alcántara would come to the Windy City with multiple years of team control on his contract.
This controllability would give the Cubs a lot of security as top talents like Kyle Tucker walk into free agency at the end of the season.
