PHOENIX — The city of Tempe will begin work on its Eighth Street Streetscape Project next week, officials announced.

The nearly $4.5 million project will see improvements made along Eighth Street between Rural Road and McClintock Drive, including the installation of a concrete multi-use path, pedestrian lighting, landscaping, ADA accessibility improvements, on-street bike facilities and landscaped curb extensions, authorities said.

Officials said the project will mostly be funded via a $4.2 million Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement grant. In addition, $241,861 will come by way of the Transit Tax.

The entire project will be split into three phases. Phase I construction will begin on Monday, when crews will begin by installing electrical infrastructure on the north side of Eighth Street, between Rural Road to Dorsey Lane. Work will take place from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the city said it will attempt to minimize the impact of disturbances while construction takes place.

Officials expect the project to be completed by late 2025.

Construction was expected to begin in 2019; however, the project was pushed back six years due to a prehistoric archaeological discovery in the area. The city of Tempe said it is working with the Four Southern Tribes of Arizona to honor and respect the land.

City of Tempe to hold ‘open-house style’ meeting

The city of Tempe is hosting an open-house style meeting where residents can meet construction crews while learning more about the Eighth Street Streetscape Project.

The meeting will be held on July 9 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Envision Center, near Apache Boulevard and Dorsey Lane.
