MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WIAT) — The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said search warrants were executed at several specialty stores on Monday. They said it was a part of a year-long investigation.

“When your business is selling synthetic urine and drug screen masking agents, that means one thing to me. You’re up to no good,” said James Tarbox, District Attorney for Coffee and Pike counties.

ALEA said they seized large amounts of marijuana and cash from CBD stores in Troy, Enterprise, Clanton, Wetumpka and Montgomery. Tarbox said they discovered a memo from one store, who maintained a list of children that could buy marijuana without a parent.

“I hope what this does, though, is sends a clear message that other stores in Alabama who are selling these types of products need to take a clear look at what they have and ensure that it is actually legal,” said Tarbox.

So, what is legal in Alabama? After July 1, THC must be capped at ten milligrams per serving for drinks and gummies, and smokable hemp is banned completely.

Kristina Beck with the Humble Hemp Shack in Gadsden said they are shutting their doors because of the new law.

“It’s devastating. Not just from our perspective, as a business, but our customers,” Beck said. “They just don’t know what they’re gonna do for their health reasons.”

Even with those new regulations, Attorney General Steve Marshall said the sale of marijuana in any form is illegal in Alabama.

“There are lawful ways of being able to sell certain products,” said Marshall. “And there are clearly illicit operations that need to be stopped. Today’s a discussion about, across multiple counties in Alabama, stopping illicit operations.”

Marshall said investigators will continue to work, and pursue leads regarding future arrests.
