HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The City of Huntsville awarded Huntsville Police Investigator Scott Northcutt with a life-saving medal for his work in saving a fellow police officer from a burning car.

Northcutt was awarded the medal during a Huntsville City Council meeting Thursday night.

The city said on Feb. 18, Northcutt came upon a serious crash at Pulaski Pike and Mallory Avenue, where an HPD patrol car was on fire with an officer trapped inside.

“Without hesitation, he [Northcutt] rushed to the burning vehicle, where he found the officer severely injured, his uniform on fire, and unable to escape due to a broken wrist,” officials said. “Northcutt pulled the officer from the car and rolled him to the ground to extinguish the flames.”

The city said that just moments later, the car became engulfed in flames, igniting ammunition in the vehicle. Officials said Northcutt shielded the officers with his own body and moved him to safety.

The city said the heat was so intense that Northcutt’s jacket melted, but the injured officer survived due to his actions.

HPD said the life-saving medal is one of its top honors, awarded in accordance with its official directive on Awards and Commendations.
