PHOENIX — Another wave of extreme heat is heading to metro Phoenix, with temperatures expected to climb back above 110 degrees before the end of the weekend.

In fact, the National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for Sunday morning through Tuesday evening.

Hotter temps through early next week will lead to areas of Major HeatRisk developing across south-central AZ and thus Extreme Heat Warnings have been issued. Increasing moisture will lead to increasing storm chances towards the middle and latter half of next week. #azwx #cawx pic.twitter.com/nsBXVb6SCY

“Those days we’re expecting temperatures anywhere from 110 to 115 degrees,” NWS meteorologist Chris Kuhlman told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Thursday morning.

The NWS issues extreme heat warnings when dangerous heat is happening or imminent.

Monday is expected to be the hottest day of the warning period, with a forecast high of 115 degrees in Phoenix.

Phoenix’s hottest day of the year so far was June 19, when it reached 117 degrees in the midst of the last extreme heat warning.

Phoenix trails close during periods of extreme heat

Due to dangerous conditions, the following Phoenix hiking trails are restricted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on extreme heat warning days:

  • Camelback Mountain: Echo Canyon Trail and Cholla trail.
  • Phoenix Mountains Preserve: Piestewa Peak Summit Trail and associated trails.
  • South Mountain Park and Preserve: Holbert Trail, Mormon Trail, Hau’Pal Loop Trail and access to the National Trail from the Pima Canyon Trailhead.

The South Mountain trails were added to the city’s restricted list this year.

Is there any monsoon rain in the Phoenix weather forecast?

Meanwhile, the Valley has yet to see any rain since the monsoon season officially started on June 15. However, that could change later next week, Kuhlman said.

“We’re not absolutely sure the extent of it, but maybe as early as Wednesday, Thursday next week we might have a chance in the Phoenix area,” he said.

KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Colton Krolak contributed to this report.
