PHOENIX — The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved the hiring of an outside firm on Thursday to conduct an independent review of election processes.

BerryDunn, an accounting and assurance firm, will conduct the review of how the election process works, including factors such as chain of custody, security, vote center selection and setup and ballot drop boxes usage.

The contract with BerryDunn will go through June 30, 2026. Some parts of the independent review could be completed by fall, county officials announced Wednesday.

In February, the Maricopa County board approved the funding for two independent election reviews.

More details on Maricopa County election process review

BerryDunn previously assisted internal auditors to examine issues related to the August 2018 primary election.

“We run free, fair and efficient elections in Maricopa County, but as I promised when I became chairman in January, a comprehensive review will help to make our impressive elections even better,” Maricopa County Chairman Thomas Galvin said in the announcement.

“BerryDunn is a proven leader in government auditing, and this comprehensive independent review will enable us to tighten up processes and procedures so we can continue to administer best-in-class elections for Maricopa County’s 2.6 million registered voters.”
