The Chicago Cubs need to add pitching, or all their efforts will be for nothing at the end of the season.

With Justin Steele going down for the season and other pitchers fighting injuries as well, Chicago will need to hit the trade market, or it’s going to be a rough second half of the season in the Windy City.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal recently reported the Cubs have already made inquiries about Miami Marlins pitchers Edward Cabrera and Sandy Alcántara ahead of the trade deadline.

“The Cubs’ biggest need, after losing left-hander Justin Steele to season-ending elbow surgery and righty Javier Assad to a strained left oblique, is a pitcher who could start a postseason game,” Rosenthal wrote. “That type of pitcher almost certainly will be in scant supply at the deadline. But the Cubs, according to sources briefed on their plans, already are canvassing the market, making inquiries on Miami Marlins right-handers Sandy Alcantara and Edward Cabrera, among many others.”

Alcántara makes the most sense as a trade fit for the Cubs because he comes with team control, too. But if Chicago doesn’t want to spend the prospect capital it would take to land the former Cy Young winner, falling back on Cabrera as a backup plan wouldn’t hurt.

Both Marlins righties are incredibly talented and expected to be available at the trade deadline. It’s a very good sign for Cubs fans that the team is already inquiring about key names on the trade block.

With that in mind, it should be looked at as almost a guarantee that the Cubs add a starting pitcher in July.
